In the spring of 1849, the newly founded Roman Republic was besieged by French forces. The Victorian poet and translator Arthur Hugh Clough was present, and he drew upon his experiences when writing Amours de Voyage. Through letters home the epic poem tells the story of an Englishman in the midst of the conflict, his relationship with a countrywoman likewise trapped, and the chances and changes of war, nationhood, and personal happiness.
